The British School in The Netherlands

How to Register

You can register at the BSN Language Centre in Leidschenveen. If you are a new student, you will first be tested to establish your language level in English or Dutch (except for complete beginners wishing to take a Dutch course).

Prospective students can choose testing and registration sessions on either Monday afternoon or early evening.

The level testing will take about 45 minutes to an hour and a teacher will advise you on the best course or courses for you.

You can either sign up and pay to reserve your place straight away or register later. If you choose to think about it and register later your place will not be reserved. You will receive information to take away with you about what to do next.

Make an appointment for level testing and registration.

Are the Language Centre teachers qualified native speakers?

Yes. The teachers who teach at the BSN Language Centre are qualified, native speakers with ample teaching experience in a variety of fields. Furthermore, all our English teachers have at least a CELTA qualification (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) or equivalent.

How can I find out what my level is?

Level testing is held every Monday between 12.00 and 18.00. Simply make an appointment by clicking on the Registration/Level Testing date of your choice, on the website. After testing, you will be able to register for a course that best suits your learning needs and goals.

When can I start?

You will be able to start one week after you register (providing there is a place on the course of your choice).

Is it possible to register and start later?

Yes, it is possible to register now, and start later. Simply complete the registration and payment.  You may then choose the starting date of your choice. The Language Centre office staff will confirm with you that this date is available.

I am not sure when I would like to start. What happens then?

If you attend registration but do not enrol immediately, your registration form and test results will be kept on file. If you decide to enrol at a later date we will confirm that there is space in the advised course, and then send you a digital registration form to fill in followed by the confirmation bill by email.

How long do the courses last?

The BSN Language Centre's academic year begins in September and ends in July. Students can choose how long they would like to study: 1, 3, 6 months or a full year.

Is it cheaper to sign up for longer periods?

Yes, it is. If you compare the prices, you will see that the longer you study, the cheaper the price per lesson becomes. We believe in rewarding our long term students with a reduction.

I would like to take an intensive course. Is this possible?

We offer the following intensive courses:

  • 2-week intensive Summer courses for Dutch and English every July.

Dates are published in advance on the website.

I can't study for full weeks at a time. What other options do I have?

Depending on the your level, it might be possible to take 2 courses at the same time (e.g. a general day course 2x per week and a conversation day course 1x per week), making 7.5 hours per week. This allows our students the flexibility to work around their own schedules.

If I take more than one course at the same time, do I get a discount?

You may be entitled to a discount on a second or third course, taken at the same time. Please ask for more details at registration. Please note that all our discounts only apply to enrolments of 13 lessons or more.

If I have signed up for a course and decide to continue do I get a discount?

Yes, you do. In this case you will receive a 5% continuing students' discount. Please note this discount applies to enrolments of 13 lessons or more.

Are the course materials included in the prices?

The materials are not included in the price of the course. The prices can be found on the price list.

When will I be ready to move to a new level?

The teacher who interviews you at registration may be able to give you a rough indication of the length of time you will need to attend lessons in order to progress to the next level. This will depend on whether you have time to study outside the classroom and whether you have regular exposure to English. Your class teacher will also give feedback on your progress throughout your course.

If I move to a different level, do I have to buy new materials?

Yes, you do. If this happens, the teacher will inform you.

Can I pay in instalments (parts)?

If the total of your course/s comes to more than €800 you may request to pay in instalments. Please ask at the office about the requirements/conditions in order to do this.

Is V.A.T. (B.T.W.) charged?

The BSN is a non-profit organisation, and thus no V.A.T. (B.T.W.) is charged to our students.

What happens if I cannot attend a lesson due to a personal reason?

We are unable to compensate for lessons that you miss due to any personal reasons. Please review the BSN Language Centre Conditions of Registration and Payment.

What happens if I take a holiday during my course?

You will receive the lessons calendar for the full year when you register. This is also published on the website. They show the BSN Language Centre's holidays and the Dutch public holidays. Please plan around these holidays by choosing different enrolment periods. E.g. if you would like to sign up for 3 months but you have a holiday planned after 4 weeks for 2 or 3 weeks, you could choose for example: 1 month, go on holiday and sign up for 2 or 3 months or longer when you return.

Can I get an official certificate at the end of my course?

Yes. If you would like a certificate showing the number of hours that you attended and the level of your course, please ask your teacher.

The BSN Language Centre certificates are 'Certificates of Attendance' only.

In what language are the courses taught?

The BSN Language Centre students are international. Many of them have no knowledge of the Dutch language.

The English courses are taught in English.

The Dutch courses are taught in Dutch.
